STEM Lab

Why is STEM Education So Important?

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. STEM is important because it pervades every part of our lives. Science is everywhere in the world around us. Technology is continuously expanding into every aspect of our lives. Engineering is the basic designs of roads and bridges, but also tackles the challenges of changing global weather and environmentally-friendly changes to our home. Mathematics is in every occupation, every activity we do in our lives.

STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators.

Innovation leads to new products and processes that sustain our economy. This innovation and science literacy depends on a solid knowledge base in the STEM areas. It is clear that most jobs of the future will require a basic understanding of math and science. Despite these compelling facts, mathematics and science scores on average among U.S. students are lagging behind other developing countries. Here’s how STEM education can be so important to young students.

Why STEM Education?

“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important as we face the benefits and challenges of both globalization and a knowledge-based economy. To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels much beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.” (National Science Foundation)

Who benefits from STEM?

STEM education helps to bridge the ethnic and gender gaps sometimes found in math and science fields. Initiatives have been established to increase the roles of women and minorities in STEM-related fields. STEM education breaks the traditional gender roles. In order to compete in a global economy, STEM education and careers must be a national priority. Each and every decision made uses an aspect of STEM to understand the implications.

Tinkering labs

About: Tinkering Laboratories

With a vision to ‘Cultivate one Million children in India as Neoteric Innovators’, Atal Innovation Mission, an initiative of the Government Of India, is establishing Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATLs) in schools across India.

Objectives

The objective of this scheme is to foster curiosity, creativity and imagination in young minds and inculcate skills such as design mind – set, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing, rapid calculations, measurements etc. Young children will get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand what, how and why aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math).

Key Features of ATL

ATL is a work space where young minds can give shape to their ideas through hands on do-it-yourself mode; and learn innovation skills. Young children will get a chance to work with tools and equipment to understand the concepts of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). ATL would contain educational and learning ‘do it yourself’ kits and equipment on – science, electronics, robotics, open source microcontroller boards, sensors and 3D printers and computers. Other desirable facilities include meeting rooms and video conferencing facility.

In order to foster inventiveness among students, ATL can conduct different activities ranging from regional and national level competitions, exhibitions, workshops on problem solving, designing and fabrication of products, lecture series etc. at periodic intervals.

Financial Support

AIM will provide grant-in-aid that includes a one-time establishment cost of Rs. 10 lakh and operational expenses of Rs. 10 lakh for a maximum period of 5 years to each ATL.

Eligibility

  1. Schools (minimum Grade VI – X) managed by Government, local body or private trusts/society to set up ATL.
  2. The applicant school would have to provide at least 1,500 Sq. Ft. of built up space. Applicant schools from hilly / Himalayan and island states, UTs would have to provide atleast 1,000 Sq. Ft. of built up space. The existing facilities for meeting rooms and video conferencing among others can be used to supplement the laboratory.

Application process

Government calls for applications for establishment of ATL from eligible schools. In response to the call for applications, schools may apply online. To access the online application

Maker Space

What is a Makerspace?

A place where people can come together to use, and learn to use materials as well as develop creative projects.

Makerspaces promote learning through play and can be created in a classroom, a library or even in a standalone building. The important idea is that it is a place that can be used for a range of activities with changing and flexible educational goals and creative purposes.

  • exploration and participatory learning
  • Facilitate informal learning opportunities where connections between home, school,
  • Collaborative learning where educators and students pool their skills and knowledge and share in the tasks of teaching and learning;
  • Develop a culture of creating.

Making is fundamental to what it means to be human. We must make, create and express ourselves to feel whole. There is something unique about makingphysical things. These things are like little pieces of us and seem to embody portions of our souls”

Smart Classrooms

Smart Classrooms are technologically advanced digital or new media classrooms that provide great opportunities for teaching and learning by integrating new learning technologies such as computers, audience response technology, assistive listening devices, networking, and audio or visual capabilities. Smart classrooms are especially design for school and colleges which provides numerous tools and other contents for learning using advance media representation facility.

A smart classroom is where the concept of blended learning is blooming. Smart classrooms are technologically enhanced that enable teaching and learning opportunities like never before! Learning is fun when subjects are interesting, and smart classes are doing exactly that by making the student’s most boring subject palatable. By placing a digital learning technology, equipped with a specialised software, assistive listening devices and audio/visual capabilities in a classroom.

A Smart classroom provides:

  • Students and teachers use their computers to go to a virtual meeting place instead of a classroom.
  • A list of students is recorded.

Lecture:

Teachers can choose from a variety of synchronous technologies including:

  1. Slide presentation
  2. Audio and video conferencing
  3. Application sharing
  4. Shared whiteboard

Virtual Reality Lab

What makes VR in education Different?

Virtual reality can be used to enhance student learning and engagement. VR education can transform the way educational content is delivered; it works on the premise of creating a virtual world — real or imagined — and allows users not only see it but also interact with it. Being immersed in what you’re learning motivates you to fully understand it. It’ll require less cognitive load to process the information.

Here are just a few properties that makes virtual reality in education so powerful.

Thanks to the feeling of presence VR provides, students can learn about a subject by living it. It’s easy to forget that VR experiences aren’t real — a body actually believes it’s in a new place. This feeling engages the mind in a way that is remarkable.
